NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE (7/21/2015) A pedestrian was struck and killed by a truck on U.S. 13 south of Route 141 (Basin Road) this morning, Delaware State Police said.

The victim was a 78-year-old Delaware City man. His name is being withheld by police pending notification of family.

The accident in the southbound lanes happened shortly after 6:30 a.m. in front of New Castle Airport.

Two northbound lanes remained closed until 7:15 a.m. but all southbound lanes remained closed. DelDOT reported all southbound lanes reopened at 8:45 a.m.

Police said the victim stepped into the path of a tractor-trailer driven by John Davis, 60, of Westville, New Jersey. Davis was not injured but was taken to a hospital as a precaution, police said.

After the man stepped into the roadway, police said, Davis braked and swerved in an atempt to avoid him but the man fell and was struck.
