Pedestrian struck, killed on Chestnut Hill Road

NEWARK, DELAWARE (7/17/2015) A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle east of Newark late Thursday, according to Delaware State Police.

The accident was reported just after 10 p.m.

James E. Duff Jr., 42, of Newark, was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of E. Chestnut Hill Road (Route 4) just east of Gender Road.

Duff stepped into the path of a 2010 Jeep Wrangler in the right lane. He was thrown up onto the hood of the SUV and then into the roadway, police said.

Duff was treated at the scene by New Castle County paramedics and taken to Christiana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Jeep, Donald Lane, 44, of Newark, was not injured. Police said he was wearing a seat belt.

The road was closed about 2.5 hours as police investigated.

It was one of two pedestrian accidents in New Castle County late Thursday. Another happened on Route 273 (Christiana Road) near the Georgetown Manor Apartments.
