TOWNSEND, DELAWARE (2/21/2019) A 35-year-old Dagsboro woman died when her car went off Route 1 east of Townsend and into a pond, Delaware State Police said.

The woman was trapped in the vehicle until extricated by rescue divers.

Police said the woman was alone in the car and driving north about a half mile north of a U.S. 13 crossover, near the Willey Farms market, when she lost control of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata on the snow-covered highway shortly after 1 p.m.

The car slid off the edge of the road and down an embankment, into the retention pond. The car became completely submerged.

She was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, where she was pronounced dead. Police are withholding the victim’s name pending notification of next of kin.

Traffic in both directions on Route 1 was halted as the rescue operation was underway.
