Motorcyclist dies after hitting deer, run over by car

DSP logoLAUREL, DELAWARE (8/10/2015) A 45-year-old man died Sunday night after his motorcycle collided with a deer, ejecting him onto the roadway where he was then run over by an oncoming car, Delaware State Police said this morning.

The accident happened about 8:45 p.m. on Laurel Road (Route 24) just west of Christ Church Road, east of Laurel.

Brian E. Davis of Laurel was westbound on a 2009 Honda VC7 motorcycle, police said, when the front of the bike struck a small female deer that entered the roadway. The impact caused the motorcycle to fall onto its right side and slide, still entangled with the deer, onto the eastbound shoulder.

Davis was ejected and was lying in the westbound lane when Sarah A. Sturgis, 38, of Frankford, who was driving a 2008 Ford Mustang, failed to see him and ran over him, police said. The car then came to a stop.

Davis, who police said was wearing an approved helmet, was taken by ambulance to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Sturgis and her two passengers, a 24-year-old woman and a 9-year-old girl, were not hurt. All were wearing seat belts, police said.

Police are still investigating but said alcohol does not appear to be a factor on the part of either driver.

Route 24 between Christ Church and Old Stage roads was closed about 3 hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
