MILFORD, DELAWARE (8/9/2015) A 23-year-old man died after a car he was riding in crashed and overturned on Route 1 (Bay Road) north of Milford this morning, Delaware State Police said. Two other people suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

The accident happened about 5:40 a.m. just south of Cicada Lane.

The man killed was identified as Edgar D. Molina, 23, of Silver Spring, Maryland.

Police said Molina was a rear-seat passenger in a 2003 Honda Element driven by Mauricio G. Borda, 20, of Greenbelt, Maryland.

They were southbound when for unknown reasons the Honda drifted into the median, police said, with Borda over-correcting and crossing both southbound lanes before striking a curb near the exit of the Shore Stop gas station at 1885 Bay Road.

The Honda continued along the road where it struck a small tree, a utility pole and finally a large tree that caused it to spin around and roll over before coming to a stop, police said.

Police said Molina was in the rear seat and was not properly restrained. He was taken by ambulance to Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Borda also was taken to the hospital, treated and released. Police said he was wearing a seat belt.

Another rear-seat passenger, Alejandra Uribe, 19, of Falls Church, Virginia, also was treated at the hospital and released. Police said she wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

Police said they are still investigating but alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

Southbound Route 1 was closed about 2.5 hours as troopers investigated and the wreckage was cleared.

Frederica firefighters also responded.
