5 hurt in crash of 3 motorcycles, car on Chapman Road

DSP logoCHRISTIANA, DELAWARE (7/18/2015) Five people were injured, including four on three motorcycles, in a crash on Chapman Road near University Plaza, Delaware State Police said.

The accident was reported at 9:37 p.m. Friday.

Police gave this account:

Oliver Ngu, 56, of Hartford, Connecticut, was driving a 2015 Ford Edge eastbound on Chapman Road west of Christiana Road (Route 273) attempting a left turn into the parking lot of the Staybridge Suites hotel and failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic.

As Ngu turned he drove into the path of a westbound Harley-Davidson Softail operated by Robert L. Smith, 45, of Wilmington. The front end of the motorcycle struck the right passenger side of the Ford, causing Smith to be ejected into the roadway.

Smith’s motorcycle then struck another westbound Harley-Davidson operated by Bruce Lodgeman, 38, of Garnett Valley, Pennsylvania., which caused him to be ejected into the roadway.

Lodgeman’s motorcycle then struck a westbound 2008 Harley-Davidson FKC operated by Matthew Brinton, 37, of Wilmington, causing him to be ejected along with his passenger, Kimberly Brinton, 39, of Wilmington.

Ngu was not injured and was cited for a vehicle turning left must yield right of way to oncoming traffic. He was traveling with his son who was in the front passenger seat who was not injured, and his daughter who was sitting in the right rear seat who was taken to Christiana Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Smith, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken by ambulance to Christiana where he was admitted with serious injuries. He was in the ICU early today in stable condition.

Matthew Brinton, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken by ambulance to Christiana where he was admitted with serious non-life threatening injuries.

Kimberly Brinton, also not wearing a helmet, suffered minor injuries which did not require medical attention.

Lodgeman, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

This crash remains under investigation. The eastbound lanes of Chapman Road were closed about 15 minutes and the westbound lane was closed for about an hour as the crash was investigated and cleared.
