Man struck, killed by hit-and-run vehicle on I-95 is identified

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (5/13/2017) A 53-year-old man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run vehicle on Interstate 95 in Wilmington early today, Delaware State Police said.

The pedestrian crash was reported at 3:36 a.m. in the southbound lanes approaching Martin Luther King Boulevard.

The striking vehicle was identified as a silver or gray Nissan. Police said the vehicle fled without stopping.

Police said they didn’t know why the man, later identified as James Stokes of Wilmington, was walking on the highway. He was treated at the scene by New Castle County paramedics, then  taken to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, where he was pronounced dead.

Only a single lane of southbound traffic was open on the left for about two hours as police investigated.
