Man, 20, charged after drugs, assault rifle seized near Newark

NEWARK, DELAWARE (9/7/2015) A 20-year-old man was arrested after an investigation into illegal drug sales at a home north of Newark, the Delaware State Police reported today.

Joshua Gaines was arrested Thursday at his home in the 200 block of Smith Mill Road, in the Middle Run Crossing neighborhood.

A search of the home found 5.3 pounds of marijuana, 10.9 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, oxycodone pills, a sawed-off shotgun, an AR-15 assault rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and $2,049 in suspected drug sale proceeds, police said.

Gaines was charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance in a Tier 2 quantity, possession of a controlled substance in a Tier 2 quantity, possession of a destructive weapon, two counts of possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was released after posting $10,200 secured bail.

The arrest was made by the New Castle County Governor’s Task Force, which includes state troopers and officers from the Division of Probation and Parole.
