FREDERICA, DELAWARE (10/21/2017) A 54-year-old Milford woman was struck and killed while crossing Route 1 (Bay Road) near Frederica early today, the Delaware State Police said.
The collision happened about 12:07 a.m. just north of the southern end of Frederica Road, an area under construction.
Police said the woman, later identified as Patricia L. Jones, ran into the path of a southbound 2004 Nissan Altima.
The driver of the car swerved to avoid the woman but she was struck by the right front bumper and thrown into the southbound left lane, where she then was struck by a tractor-trailer that continued south without stopping.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are withholding her name pending notification of next of kin.
Police said the victim was wearing dark clothing and wasn’t carrying a light.
“Alcohol is being considered as a factor on her behalf,” Master Cpl. Michael Austin said.
The driver of the car, a 33-year-old Milford man whose name wasn’t released, stopped in the median. His name wasn’t released.
Austin said the driver was wearing a seat belt and wasn’t injured.
Southbound Route 1 was closed about five hours as police investigated.
Austin asked anyone with information on the incident to call Master Cpl. J. Lane at 302-698-8457.
