WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (3/10/2016) City police are awaiting autopsy results to learn the identities of two people killed in a fiery crash on New Castle Avenue late Wednesday night.

The crash happened about 10:50 p.m. north of Terminal Avenue at the entrance to Eden Park.

The car struck two utility poles on the east side of the street and the gas tank of the vehicle burst into flames, trapping the driver and passenger as the fire consumed the vehicle, police said.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by New Castle County paramedics.

Delmarva Power reported just after 10 a.m. that 66 customers in the area remained without service as a result of damage from the crash, but service was restored by early afternoon.

Wilmington firefighters and a St. Francis ambulance also responded.

The crash and subsequent utility repairs closed New Castle Avenue in the area overnight, but DelDOT reported at 11:39 a.m. that all lanes had been reopened.

Police are still investigating the crash and asked anyone who witnessed it to call Sgt. James Karschner at 302-576-4414.
