UPDATED STORY: Police identify victim

MILLTOWN, DELAWARE (11/14/2015) A  59-year-old man was struck and killed on westbound Kirkwood Highway this evening, Delaware State Police said.

The pedestrian accident happened shortly before 6 p.m. at the Delaware Park entrance drive.

Police said the man was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway (Route 2) but ignored the no-crossing signal at the crosswalk and wasn’t carrying a light.

He was struck by a 2006 Honda Accord, driven by Ronald Niblett, in the right lane. The pedestrian was vaulted over the roof of the vehicle, police said, and landed in the roadway.

The 59-year-old was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

His name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

Niblett, who stopped his car at the scene, was not injured.

The westbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway (Route 2) were closed about 2 hours as police investigated.
