WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (9/22/2015) About 200 people attended a vigil on Rodney Square to remember a man stabbed to death while protecting a woman and her baby near a Wilmington bus stop.

The vigil about 9:30 p.m. Monday came a week after Thomas Cottingham, 27, of Wilmington was killed.

Among those attending was Amadi Muhammad, the woman he was protecting when he was stabbed multiple times, in the back and upper torso.

Muhamed said she didn’t know her attacker nor Cottingham, and police have said the men didn’t know each other.

Police have charged Calvin Hooker III, 25,  of Wilmington, in the crime.

Mayor Dennis P. Williams reportedly has agreed to place a permanent plaque on Rodney Square honoring Cottingham for his heroic action.
