Motorcyclist killed, wife injured in crash near Broadkill Beach

BROADKILL BEACH, DELAWARE (9/8/2015) A motorcyclist was killed and his wife injured in a crash near Broadkill Beach on Monday, the Delaware State Police said today.

The accident happened about 5:45 p.m. as Darrell E. Waller Jr., 56, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was driving a 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle west on Broadkill Road (Route 16) just west of Bay Shore Drive approaching a sharp right curve.

Waller failed to negotiate the turn and crossed the eastbound lanes before exiting the south side of the road where the motorcycle struck a road sign, police said.  The motorcycle then went down an embankment, ejecting Waller and his wife into the marsh.

Waller, who was wearing an approved helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple traumatic injuries.

His wife, Lucinda Waller, 56, of Pittsburgh, was taken by ambulance to Beebe Healthcare’s hospital in Lewes, where she was admitted with undetermined injuries.

She also was wearing a helmet.

Police are still investigating but said alcohol and speed do not appear to be contributing factors in the crash.

Traffic on Broadkill Road was restricted to intermittent lane closures for about two hours while the crash was investigated.
