21-year-old DSU student dies in SUV crash

DSP logoKENTON, DELAWARE (5/11/2015) A 21-year-old Delaware State University student died early today when an SUV went off Sudlersville Road and crashed into a tree west of Kenton.

Delaware State Police said said Dymond Dantzler, of Maryland, died in the accident reported at 1:36 a.m. just east of the western end of Owls Nest Road

Friends said Dantzler was a DSU student and were remembering her on Twitter under the hashtag #DymondsAreForever (comments below).

Tuleda Grantham commented on Facebook that they were heading home after completing their sophomore year of college.

Police said a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Kevin T. Perry, 21, of Maryland, was eastbound when he failed to negotiate a curve, struck a DelDOT sign with the passenger-side mirror, went through a grassy ditch, struck a culvert and went airborne. The SUV then struck a tree with the front right bumper before coming to a stop.

Hartly firefighters extricated Dantzler from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Perry was taken by ambulance to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital in Dover for treatment of injuries police said were not life-threatening.

Perry was wearing a seat belt but Dantzler was not, police said.

Troopers are still investigating the crash.

The road was closed about three and a half hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
