HOCKESSIN, DELAWARE (3/24/2015) A 69-year-old Hockessin man was killed and four other people injured in a collision between an SUV and car Monday night on Lancaster Pike (Route 48), state police said.

The man killed was identified this afternoon as Vijayachandra Babu.

The accident happened about 10:35 p.m. at Old Wilmington Road.

Baby, driving a 2000 Honda CRV, was westbound on Old Wilmington and stopped at a stop sign before turning left onto Lancaster Pike. As he made the turn, Babu drove into the path of a northbound 2000 Saab 95, police said.

The front of the Saab struck the driver’s side of the Honda.

Babu was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 73-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Honda was taken by ambulance to Christiana and admitted with serious injuries, police said.

Austin V. Griffith, 19, of Wilmington, the driver of the Saab, and his two passengers, a 17-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man, were taken by ambulance to Christiana for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.

All three in the Saab were wearing seat belts as was Babu, but the 73-year-old woman was not, police said.

Lancaster Pike was closed about 2 hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.

Cranston Heights and Hockessin fire companies were called to the scene as well as ambulances from Belvedere, Elsmere and Mill Creek fire companies.
