WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (1/20/2015) A man wounded during a scuffle with Wilmington police was shot by two officers after the man pointed a gun at them, authorities said today.

Police released this account of the incident they described as a motor-vehicle stop in the first block of Vandever Ave. that happened about 4:50 p.m. Thursday:

While obtaining information from the four occupants, the rear driver-side passenger, identified as Marvin Jones, 24, a parolee from Georgia on a weapons violation, “was observed to be making motions consistent with attempting to conceal an object in his waistband.”

The officers ordered him from the vehicle, and  “as Jones was exiting the vehicle he immediately began to struggle with officers.”

The struggle continued around the rear of the vehicle and onto a sidewalk where Jones removed a 9 mm handgun from his waistband and directed it at the officers.

Two of the three officers drew their weapons, discharging them at Jones and striking him in the upper torso, according to the police statement.

The officers performed CPR on Jones until New Castle County paramedics arrived. Jones was then taken to Christiana Hospital by state police helicopter.

The three other occupants of the vehicle were secured by other officers who had arrived on the scene.

Police said they found a loaded .45 caliber handgun in the rear passenger area of the vehicle.

Jones and Robert Carlisle, 28, also of Gerogia, were charged with numerous weapons-related offenses.

Carlisle remains in Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $30,000 cash bail.

Jones is still hospitalized, according to today’s statement from police, although they did not give his condition. Police had reported last week he was in critical condition.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave pending outcome of the ongoing investigation.
