Man shot in scuffle with Wilmington police in critical condition

UPDATED STORY: Police say 2 officers shot man after he pointed gun at them

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (1/16/2015) A 24-year-old man shot by a Wilmington police officer Thursday afternoon is in critical but stable condition today, authorities said.

The shooting happened in the first block of Vandever Avenue when uniformed officers conducted a motor vehicle stop for a traffic violation, police said.

The car was a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis with New Jersey registration.

Officers approached the car to make contact with a passenger at which point a struggle began resulting in the shooting, according to a police statement today.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Christiana Hospital by state police helicopter.

Police said detectives are still gathering evidence and conducting interviews pertaining to the shooting.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.
