NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE (9/29/2017) The bridge on Route 141 over U.S. 13 near New Castle will be closed several weeks for major repairs, the Delaware Department of Transportation announced Thursday.
The construction project is scheduled to begin Monday and is expected to be finished by late January, depending on weather, with the bridge closure in both directions lasting 45 days.
The project includes jacking the bridge up a few inches to increase clearance for large vehicles on U.S. 13.
Over-height trucks on U.S. 13 (North DuPont Highway) have struck the steel girders of the bridge multiple times a year due to substandard clearance, DelDOT said.
The existing concrete deck, which has deteriorated, will be replaced with precast concrete, and the southbound sidewalk will be removed to allow for widening of the northbound sidewalk.
The full bridge closure will require detours for motorists and pedestrians, DelDOT said.
Motorists will be directed on several circuitous detours. Signs will be posted.
DelDOT said the following ramps will be closed during the bridge closure:
- Traveling south on U.S. 13 to southbound Route 141.
- Traveling south on Route 141 to northbound U.S. 13.
- Traveling north on U.S. 13 to northbound Route 141.
The following ramps will be open during the full closure of the bridge, but will be closed nights and weekends for repairs after the bridge is reopened:
- Traveling south on U.S. 13 to northbound Route 141.
- Traveling south on Route 141 to southbound U.S. 13.
- Traveling north on U.S. 13 to southbound Route 141.
- Traveling north on Route 141 to southbound U.S. 13.
