Fire damages 200 vehicles at salvage yard near Newport

NEWPORT, DELAWARE (7/23/2018) Fire at an auto salvage yard near Newport damaged more than 200 vehicles, authorities said.

A person driving by the area reported the blaze about 9 p.m. Saturday at Insurance Auto Auctions, 417 Old Airport Road, near Interstate 95 and Basin Road.

Several vehicles in the vehicle storage lot were engulfed in flames when Minquas Fire Company of Newport arrived, said Michael G. Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started.

Chionchio didn’t have an estimate of the dollar value of the damage.
