Fire at ice cream shop on Capitol Trail ruled accidental

Fire heavily damaged Bruster's Real Ice Cream, 1620 Capitol Trail (Route 2), east of Newark. (Photo: Delaware Free News), NEWARK, DELAWARE (7/23/2018) A fire that heavily damaged an ice cream shop east of Newark on Sunday has been ruled accidental, authorities said.

The blaze broke out shortly before 2 a.m. at Bruster’s Real Ice Cream, 1620 Capitol Trail (Route 2), said Michael G. Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

Smoke was coming out of the one-story building when firefighters from Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company arrived, he said.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in the store.

Damage was estimated at $100,000.

No injuries were reported.
