CHRISTIANA, DELAWARE (7/17/2017) A motorcyclist killed in a crash Sunday night on northbound Interstate 95 that also involved several passenger cars has been identified, Delaware State Police said.

The crash was reported at 9:49 p.m. south of Churchmans Marsh.

Police identified the motorcyclist as 45-year-old Christopher Cooper of Philadelphia.

He was driving a 2001 Suzuki GSX motorcycle in the left center lane under the Route 1 flyover ramps when, police said, he lost control of the bike and then laid it down, sliding into the left shoulder and striking the concrete median barrier.

The bike came to rest on the left shoulder. Cooper was ejected into the northbound lanes, where he was struck by several vehicles which continued north on I-95.

Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. He was wearing a helmet.

The striking vehicles were described as:

  • Silver 2014-2016 Mazda 3 with front right damage
  • 1998-2002 Honda Accord with front end damage

Northbound I-95 was closed at Route 273 for about three hours as police investigated.

Any witnesses are asked to call Sgt. P. Dzielak of the Collision Reconstruction Unit at Troop 2, 302-365-8484.
