Homeowner shoots at fleeing burglary suspect

CLAYTON, DELAWARE (8/24/2016) A homeowner fired a handgun toward a fleeing burglary suspect west of Clayton early Tuesday, the Delaware State Police said.

The incident happened about 1 a.m. at a home int he 1000 block of Clayton Delaney Road.

The resident heard noises coming from the back porch of his home and found someone wearing a mask trying to get inside.

Upon seeing the homeowner, police said, the intruder immediately fled ran into a cornfield at the rear of the yard.

The homeowner then fired  multiple rounds from a handgun toward the fleeing male, who was wearing a gret T-shirt, but police don’t think any of them hit him.

Troopers and a state police helicopter, as well as Smyrna police, searched the area but failed to locate the attempted burglary suspect.

Police are still investigating but said they don’t expect to file charges against the homeowner, who was not injured.
