LAUREL, DELAWARE (6/6/2016) A 31-year-old Laurel man was killed and another man seriously injured in a crash west of the town, Delaware State Police reported this morning.

The single-car crash happened about 9:20 p.m. Sunday on Sharptown Road (Route 24) near Mount Pleasant Road.

The man killed was identified as Alvaro De Jesus Garcia. Police said he wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jesus Garcia was driving a 2009 Nissan Altima eastbound at high speed and failed to negotiate a moderate left curve, traveling down an embankment and striking a utility pole, police said. The car then sideswiped two trees before spinning around and coming to a stop on the roadway.

A passenger in the front seat, Henry Ortiz Escalante, 19, of Laurel, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car, police said.

He was taken by ambulance to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford and admitted for treatment.

Route 24 was closed in the area about three hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
