44-year-old man in serious condition after Route 1 crash

TOWNSEND, DELAWARE (4/30/2016) A 44-year-old man was in serious but stable condition after he was trapped in his vehicle after a crash on southbound Route 1 this afternoon east of Townsend, authorities said.

The accident happened about 3:20 p.m. south of New Discovery Road, an emergency access point on the highway.

The man was first treated by a private ambulance service, then freed by firefighters from Townsend and Odessa, said Cpl. David J. McKinney Jr. of New Castle County paramedics.

He was evaluated by paramedics for injuries to his chest and extremities, then flown to Christiana Hospital in Stanton by a Delaware State Police helicopter.

State police are investigating the crash.
