REHOBOTH BEACH, DELAWARE (4/10/2016) A 55-year-old Magnolia man who declined medical treatment after a minor crash on Route 1 near Rehoboth Beach later died of injuries attributed to the accident, Delaware State Police said Saturday.

The collision happened about 2:30 p.m. April 2 about four-tenths of a mile north of Holland Glade Road, near the Kmart store.

The man who died was identified as Richard W. Carmean III.

He was driving a 2009 Kia Sorrento sport-utility vehicle in the left lane of northbound Route 1 (Coastal Highway) when his car’s left rear bumper was struck by the front of a 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck that had swerved to avoid another vehicle that had pulled out of the Kmart parking lot, police said.

Both vehicles involved in the collision were able to stop safely in a turn lane and no damage was observed on either vehicle, police said.

Carmean and a female passenger in his car as well as the driver of the pickup, John W. Weeks, 18, of Rehoboth Beach, told troopers they were not hurt and declined any medical treatment at the scene.

After returning home, police said, Carmean began to feel discomfort and was taken by personal vehicle to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital in Dover, where he died on Monday. An autopsy by the Division of Forensic Science determined Carmean had died as a result of injuries received in the crash.

Police are still investigating and asked any witnesses of the crash to call Master Cpl. Jay Burns at 302-703-3266.
