GREENWOOD, DELAWARE (2/27/2016) A 41-year-old man was seriously injured Friday night when his car spun out of control and struck a utility pole on U.S. 13 south of Greenwood, the Delaware State Police reported this morning. The driver was charged with DUI.

The crash happened about 11:30 p.m. on Sussex Highway (U.S. 13) north of Adams Road.

Police said Paul R. Edwards, of Greenwood, was northbound and speeding before his 2012 Ford Taurus spun half way around, hit the pole and went another 80 feet before coming to a stop.

He was treated by Sussex County paramedics and taken by ambulance to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.

Police charged Edwards with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving at an unreasonable speed, driving with a suspended license, no proof of motor vehicle insurance and failure to transfer title.

Edwards was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, police said. He was the only one in the car.

The highway was closed about 1.5 hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
