Bicyclist struck on Route 1 in critical condition

FREDERICA, DELAWARE (1/3/2016) A bicyclist struck by a car when he was trying to cross Route 1 south of Frederica is in critical condition at Christiana Hospital, the Delaware State Police said today.

The accident happened about 7:05 p.m. Saturday just south of Tub Mill Pond Road/Milford Neck Road, near Meding’s Seafood restaurant.

David M. Cane, 40, of Milford, was crossing from the median to the west side when his bike was struck by the front bumper of a 2006 Toyota Camry in the left southbound lane. He was thrown from his bike onto the pavement and flown to the hospital by state police helicopter.

The driver of the car, Jose Palacious, 56, of Norfolk, Virginia, was able to stop the vehicle and was not injured.

A 2006 Jeep Wrangler, driven by Christopher L. Drummond, 25, of Milford, was behind the Camry and overturned when he attempted to avoid the accident. The Jeep came to rest in a yard west of the roadway.

Drummond was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the Jeep, police said. He was taken by ambulance to Milford Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released. A 46-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Jeep, who was wearing a seat belt, also was taken to Milford Memorial, treated and released.

A 69-year-old woman riding in the Camry was not injured, police said. Both occupants of that car were wearing seat belts.

Police said Cane was carrying a small flashlight but was not wearing a helmet.

The crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.

Southbound Route 1 was closed about three hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
