NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE (12/25/2015) One man was killed and and another was seriously injured when a box truck collided with the rear of a parked tractor-trailer on U.S. 40 west of New Castle early today, authorities said.

The accident was reported at 1:30 a.m. between Oriole Avenue and Robin Drive, just east of Route 1.

The driver and a passenger were trapped in the box truck about 20 minutes before being freed by Christiana firefighters, said Sgt. Abigail E. Haas of New Castle County paramedics.

The passenger, Terrell Lawson, 36, of New Castle, suffered multiple injuries and went into cardiac arrest after being freed, Haas said. He was taken to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, where he was pronounced dead,

The 43-year-old man who was driving the box truck, Terence P. Jones, of Newport, was treated by paramedics for a head injury and taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in serious condition, Haas said. Jones’ injuries were not life-threatening, Delaware State Police said.

Police said the 2013 International box truck was westbound just west of Oriole Avenue when for unknown reason it drifted off partially onto the right shoulder where its right front struck the rear of a 2010 Kenworth tractor and trailer which was legally parked and unoccupied on the shoulder.

The crash is still under investigation, police said.

Westbound U.S. 40 (Pulaski highway) was closed about 2.5 hours as the crash was investigated and the wreckage cleared.
