NEWARK, DELAWARE (12/21/2015) One man was taken to a hospital after fire started by a space heater heavily damaged a home near Newark this morning, authorities said. The home had no smoke detectors.

The blaze was reported just before 10 a.m. in the 200 block of Edjil Drive in the Yorkshire area.

Aetna, Hose, Hook & Ladder Company responded to extinguish the flames.

A 41-year-old man who lived in the home was taken to Christiana Hospital for smoke inhalation and was in stable condition, said Michael G. Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

Investigators determined the space heater ignited combustibles placed too close to it in a bedroom, he said. The cause was ruled accidental.

Five children and two adults were displaced by the fire, he said.
