1 dead in fire at motel on U.S. 13

NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE (12/3/2015) One person died when fire broke out in a motel room this evening along U.S. 13 near New Castle, authorities said.

The fire was reported about 5 p.m. at the Budget Motor Lodge, 140 S. DuPont Highway, just south of the Hares Corner intersection.

Firefighters from several fire companies battled the blaze and found the victim, who suffered severe burns and was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Michael A. McColley of New Castle County paramedics.

Wilmington Manor, Christiana, Elsmere , Good Will and Delaware City fire companies responded.

The Delaware state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the blaze.

Fire damage was estimated at $10,000, said Michael Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

He said the other tenants were able to return to their rooms about 9 p.m.

An autopsy was planned to determine the victim’s identity.
