NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE (11/11/2015) A 30-year-old woman was seriously injured Tuesday night when she was struck by a car while walking across New Castle Avenue (Route 9) near New Castle, authorities said.

The accident happened about 8:30 p.m. in the left northbound lane just north of West Avenue.

The victim, identified as Shamir Z. Ridley of Wilmington, was treated at the scene for cuts and a possible head injury, said Cpl. Abigail E. Haas of New Castle County paramedics. Ridley was then taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton in serious condition.

Delaware State Police said Ridley was struck by the left front bumper of a 2012 Toyota Scion driven by Thomas D. Mells, 65, of New Castle. Mells was not hurt.

Troopers cited Ridley for crossing at other than a crosswalk and not carrying a light on a roadway.

Holloway Terrace and Good Will fire companies responded.

New Castle Avenue was closed about an hour and a half as police investigated.
