Man critically burned when clothing catches fire

NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE (11/6/2015) A 41-year-old man suffered significant second- and third-degree burns when his clothing caught fire, authorities said. He was in critical condition.

The incident was reported at 10:23 p.m. Wednesday in the 1500 block of Beaver Brook Plaza, off U.S. 13.

“The man summoned help and bystanders poured water on him to cool his body prior to the arrival of firefighters and EMS personnel,” said Sgt. Michael A. McColley of New Castle County paramedics.

The man was treated at the scene for burns to his neck, upper body, abdomen and extremities, and then taken by Good Will Fire Company ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton.

Wilmington Manor Fire Company also responded.

The Delaware state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
