Bear man, 50, killed in motorcycle crash near Middletown

MIDDLETOWN, DELAWARE (11/4/2015) A motorcyclist was killed this afternoon in a collision with a car on U.S. 301 north of Middletown, the Delaware State Police said.

The crash happened about 1:20 p.m. on Summit Bridge Road (U.S. 301) at Old School House Road.

The motorcyclist, identified by police as William J. Ewell, 50, of Bear, suffered a substantial head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene, said Cpl. Abigain E. Haas of New Castle County paramedics.

Police said Robert Fleish, 76, of Middletown, was driving a 2000 Acura TL north on Summit Bridge Road approaching the intersection and attempted to make a left hand turn, driving into the path of Ewell’s southbound 2008 Kawasaki ZX14 motorcycle.

The front of the bike struck the right rear side of the Acura, and Ewell was ejected from the motorcycle. He landed in the roadway just south of the intersection.

Police said he was wearing a helmet.

Fleish stopped the car in the southbound lanes, 150 feet south of the intersection, police said. He was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Summit Bridge Road was closed in the area for about 3 hours as police investigated.
