WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (9/23/2015) A fund has been set up to pay for funeral expenses for Thomas Cottingham, who was slain in Rodney Square last week while protecting a woman and her baby from being assaulted.
City Council President Theo Gregory announced the fund Tuesday. The funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
Cottingham’s family also likely will receive help with funeral expenses from the Delaware Victim Compensation Assistance Program, but Gregory said they will still need additional funds to cover the funeral and burial.
The Thomas Cottingham Funeral Fund donations should be sent to:
Congo Funeral Home
P.O. Box 2593
Wilmington, DE 19805
Memo Line: Thomas Cottingham
Gregory said any money collected above the complete cost of the funeral services will be donated to the Police Athletic League of Wilmington in Cottingham’s memory. Gregory said he is personally donating $100 to the fund.
“Every day heroes should be an inspiration for each of us,” said Council President Gregory. “Mr. Cottingham did not hesitate to do what he felt was right in protecting a young mother and her child. I believe that his actions reflected the good that is inside all of us. Thomas was truly a Good Samaritan and we should commemorate his last, outstanding deed.”
