2 hurt when car hits tree in Glasgow; police release details

GLASGOW, DELAWARE (8/31/2015) Two people were trapped in their car for about 35 minutes Sunday afternoon after it struck a tree on Red Lion Road (Route 71) just west of Old Summit Road, authorities said.

The accident happened about 2:30 p.m.

Firefighters from Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown extricated the two victims, a 72-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman, said Sgt. Michael McColley of New Castle County paramedics.

The driver was identified today by Delaware State Police as Edward Martin of Bear. He was eastbound in a 2002 Toyota Corolla when the car went off the south side of the road for unknown reasons, police said.

Martin was treated by paramedics at the scene for chest and abdominal injuries as well as multiple scrapes. He was taken to Christiana Hospital in stable condition, McColley said. Police said today his injuries were not life threatening.

Claire Martin, who was a passenger in the front seat, was treated for facial and leg injuries as well as a possible fractured pelvis, McColley said. She was flown to Christiana by Life Net helicopter in serious but stable condition.

Red Lion Road was closed about an hour as the crash was investigated and cleared
