Newark woman dies of injuries from crash near Milford

DSP logoMILFORD, DELAWARE (8/11/2015) A Newark woman has died from injuries in a crash southwest of Milford last month, Delaware State Police said today.

Mary L. McDermott, 79, was injured July 31 when she was a passenger in a car that was struck by another vehicle that police said went through a stop sign at Staytonville and Blacksmith Shop roads.

She was flown by state police helicopter to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, and transferred Friday to Season’s Hospice, within the hospital, where she died Sunday.

McDermott had been a passenger in a 2010 Honda Civic driven by Mary H. Szczuka, 48, of Bear.

They were southbound on Blacksmith Shop Road about 7 p.m. approaching the intersection, which did not have a stop sign in their direction, when a 2008 Pontiac G5 that was westbound on Staytonville Road went through a stop sign and collided with the Honda, police said.

The driver of the Pontiac, Charles W. Lindbeck Jr., 58, of Ocean View, was charged with failing to stop at a stop sign and failure to have proof of insurance in possession.

Lindbeck declined medical treatment at the scene but his passengers, a 53-year-old woman and a 7-year-old girl, were taken to Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital, treated and released. All three were wearing seat belts, police said.

Szczuka also was treated at Milford and released.
