Bicycles collide in Elsmere, man in critical condition

ELSMERE, DELAWARE (7/31/2015) A 68-year-old man was in critical condition and undergoing emergency surgery this afternoon after two bicycles collided along Kirkwood Highway (Route 2) in Elsmere, authorities said.

The accident happened about 2 p.m. in the eastbound shoulder at Oak Avenue.

The 68-year-old was unconscious and received CPR from medical crews before being taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital, Police Chief Laura Giles said.

Cpl. Abigail Haas, of New Castle County paramedics, said the man suffered severe facial and head injuries.

Giles said the preliminary investigation found the two bicyclists were traveling in opposite directions on the shoulder when they collided.
