The man killed was identified as Troy J. Bradford.
The accident happened about 11:30 a.m. on Savannah Road two-tenths of a mile south of Rudd Road.
Police said Bradford was driving a 2000 Dodge Neon at unsafe speed for the wet and curvy roadway. On a sharp left curve, his car began to spin, he overcorrected and the Neon went off the roadway into a dense woods, with the driver’s side door striking a large tree that penetrated the driver’s seating area.
Bradford, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Savannah Road was closed in the area about 2.5 hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
Investigators will close one lane of the road again from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday as the investigation continues between Rudd Road and Waples Road.
