NEWARK, DELAWARE (5/29/2015) A Newark High School student was arrested Thursday when a loaded gun was found in his backpack, city police said.

The incident happened about 2 p.m. as school officials as well as the Newark police school resource officer were speaking with the 15-year-old student about an unrelated incident, Lt. Bill Hargrove said.

The loaded semi-automatic weapon was seized and the ninth-grade student, who lives in Wilmington, was taken into custody.

He was charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon and possession of a weapon in a safe school zone.

The boy was being held at the New Castle County Detention Center in lieu of $20,000 cash bail.

Hargove said police are still investigating to determine the origin of the gun.
