Cat dies in Wilmington fire

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (5/5/2015) A pet cat died in a fire that heavily damaged a row home in Wilmington late Monday, authorities said.

The fire broke out about 9:50 p.m. at 18 Bedford Court, a three-story middle-of-the row home. Flames were coming from the first floor when Wilmington firefighters arrived.

One city firefighter was injured during the fire and taken by ambulance to Wilmington Hospital for evaluation, said Battalion Chief James R. Jobes.

The fire was declared under control at 10:26 p.m., he said.

A city inspector declared the home unsafe and the resident, who was not home when the fire broke out, will be staying with family members, Jobes said.

Families in adjoining homes, which also had fire and smoke damage, were allowed to return to their homes.

The city Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating to determine how the fire started.
