Stone’s Tavern in Harrington damaged by fire

HARRINGTON, DELAWARE (2/24/2015) Fire caused moderate damage to Stone’s Tavern in Harrington, authorities said.

The fire broke out about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at the three-story tavern and apartment building at Mechanic Street and Railroad Avenue.

Smoke was showing when the first firefighters arrived, and heavy flames were found on the first floor and spread to the third floor.

The age and layout of the building made extinguishing the fire difficult, authorities said, but it was placed under control at 3 p.m.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office is trying to determine how the fire started.

The Harrington, Houston, Farmington, Greenwood, Frederica, Ellendale, Carlisle of Milford and Felton Fire Companies responded to the scene, as well as Kent County paramedics, Delaware State Fire Police, Kent County Mobile Command Post, Harrington Police Department and Harrington Code Enforcement and Public Works.
