Wounded suspect linked to spree of robberies

NEW CASTLE COUNTY, DELAWARE (1/26/2015) A New Castle man who was shot by a store clerk has been linked to a spree of 19 robberies or attempts since December, state police said today.

Jose A. Quinones, 32, was arrested a week ago when troopers spotted him in a car parked at the Walmart store on Centerville Road after he attempted to rob a BP gas station on Lancaster Pike near Wilmington, police said.

The clerk at the BP had fired a handgun as the robber fled empty handed after the clerk refused his demand for money.

After troopers realized Quinones was wounded in an upper extremity, he was taken to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, where he remained until Friday, Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale said.

He was then charged with 12 counts of robbery, one of attempted robbery and 13 of wearing a disguise during a felony. He was being held at Young Correctional in lieu of $65,000 bail.

Hale said detectives linked Quinones to the following robberies:

  • December 14 at 9:15 p.m.: Super Fuel, 3006 New Castle Ave.                         
  • December 16 at 9:05 p.m.: BP, 601 N. DuPont Highway.
  • December 16 at 9:22 p.m.: BP, 1 Jay Drive.       P           
  • December 20 at 2:52 p.m.: BP, 4001 Lancaster Pike.                                     
  • December 21 at 5:00 p.m.:  BP, 1713 New Castle Ave.          
  • December 22 at 5:04 a.m.: Super Fuel, 3006 New Castle Ave.            
  • December 23 at 6 p.m.: First State Market, 2510 Kirkwood Hwy.
  • December 24 at 5:11 p.m.: Ted’s Liquors, 1202 Newport Gap Pike.
  • December 31 at 10:02 p.m.: Charles Liquors, 807 N. DuPont Road.
  • January 6 at 6:45 a.m.: Shell, 3001 New Castle Avenue.      
  • January 11 at 3:11 a.m.: Dunkin Donuts, 1001 N. DuPont Highway.
  • January 12 at 4:43 p.m.: Discount Mart, 3125 New Castle Avenue.
  • January 19 at 5:49 p.m.: BP, 4001 Lancaster Pike

He also has been linked to six robberies in Wilmington, Hale said.
