Hundreds lose power as temperature plunges as low as 4

DELAWARE (1/8/2015) More than 500 electric customers are without power in Delaware and nearby Maryhland as temperatures dip into single digits this morning.

Delmarva Power reports about 360 outages in Cecil County along the Maryland-Delaware line southwest of Glasgow, with others scattered across Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

The company predicts some may not have service restored until 9 a.m.

The Delaware Electric Cooperative reports 81 customers out in the Lewes area.

By 7 a.m., the temperature had dropped to 9 degrees at New Castle Airport, with a wind chill of minus 4. The temperature was far from the record low of zero set on this date in 1970.

The temperature dropped to 11 degrees at Sussex County Airport near Georgetown — just one degree above a record of 10 set a year ago. The wind chill was minus 1.

On Monday, a high of 70 at the Sussex airport tied a record set in 1950 and matched in 2004.

The temperature today also hit 11 degrees at Dover Air Force Base, with a wind chill of minus 2.

At 6:20 a.m., the temperature hit 4 degrees at Hockessin, according to the Delaware Environmental Observing System.
