ELSMERE, DELAWARE (1/4/2015) A fire that heavily damaged a single-family home in the Elmhurst neighborhood south of Elsmere was caused by a faulty wood-burning fireplace, authorities said today.

The fire Saturday night was ruled accidental, said Michael Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

He said flames were shooting from the building when the Five Points Fire Company arrived in the 200 block of W. Summit Ave.

Damage was estimated at $85,000.

No injuries were reported but a puppy died in the fire.

Three adults and a child were displaced.
