NEW CASTLE COUNTY, DELAWARE (12/30/2014) A pit bull was shot by a New Castle County officer after it attacked a police dog on Monday, authorities reported today.

The incident happened at Sellers Park near the Pennrose community as police were investigating a homeless encampment.

A pit bull came out of a tent and “aggressively attacked K-9 Monty,” said Officer First Class Tracey Duffy, a police spokeswoman.

Officers used their stun guns to halt the pit bull, but when it recovered  the pit bull again attempted to attack Monty, Duffy said.

Monty’s handler then shot the pit bull, which was critically wounded and later euthanized, Duffy said.

Monty, a 6-year-olde German shepherd, was treated at a local animal hospital for minor injuries and released, Duffy said.
