5 hurt, 2 critically, in Route 1 crash near Smyrna

SMYRNA, DELAWARE (12/24/2014) Two people were critically injured and a third seriously hurt in a crash on Route 1 this afternoon in southern New Castle County, authorities said. Two others had minor injuries.

The accident happened about 12:50 p.m. near Black Diamond Road, a mile north of the north Smyrna interchange (Exit 119).

The three most seriously injured were treated on scene by paramedics and taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, said Cpl. Abigail Haas of New Castle County emergency medical services.

The driver, a 23-year-old woman, had possible internal and arm injuries and cuts. She was in critical condition.

A 62-year-old woman had possible chest and internal injuries. She was in critical condition.

A 16-year-old girl had possible chest injuries and and an arm injury. She was in serious conditioin, Haas said.

The two with minor injuries were taken by ambulance to the Middletown Emergency Room.

DelDOT reported the crash closed the highway in both directions.

State police are investigating the crash.

Townsend Fire Company, Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown, Citizens Hose Company of Smyrna and American Legion ambulance responded.
