SUV crashes into Hockessin nursing home; 2 hurt, 1 critically

HOCKESSIN, DELAWARE (12/24/2014) Two people were taken to a hospital this afternoon after an SUV crashed into the lobby of Cokesbury Village nursing home, authorities said.

The incident happened about 3:20 p.m. Late tonight, New Castle County police said, “The initial investigation shows an 89 year old male who was operating an SUV type vehicle, crashed into a parked vehicle at the entrance of the facility. As a result, the parked vehicle was pushed through the glass doors into the lobby area of the facility, striking the two victims.

“Yhe initial investigation shows drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision,” according to the police statement.

An 89-year-old man was pinned between the vehicle and a wall of the building, said Cpl. Abigail Haas of New Castle County paramedics. He was treated on the scene for possible internal and leg injuries and taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton in critical condition.

An 86-year-old woman was taken to Christiana with minor injuries, Haas said.

The police statement said both were in stable condition.

The two occupants of the SUV were evaluated by paramedics at the scene but declined transport to the hospital, she said.

New Castle County police are continuing their investigation of the crash.

Cranston Heights, Hockessin and Claymont firefighters responded.
