ST. GEORGES, DELAWARE (12/20/2014) A 78-year-old woman was struck by an SUV and killed while walking in the 900 block of Cox Neck Road tonight.
State police identified the woman killed as Jean L. Caricchio of Newark.
Paramedics arrived to find her in the roadway east of U.S. 13 about 6:15 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene,, said Cpl. Abigail Haas of New Castle County Emergency Medical Services.
Caricchio walked into the path of a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Tammy Poppe, 46, of New Castle, police said.
Poppe, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.
Police said Caricchio was not in a crosswalk when she was struck.
Troopers are continuing the investigation and no charges have been filed.
