STANTON, DELAWARE (12/11/2014) A 30-year-old man who was struck and killed by a pickup truck Wednesday evening near the entrance to Delaware Park was identified by state police this afternoon as John A. Riley of Newark.

It was the state’s second pedestrian fatality of the day.

The latest accident happened about 5:45 p.m. on Stanton Ogletown Road (State Route 4) as Riley was trying to cross from the north side of the road just east of Delaware Park Drive. He was struck by the front left corner of a westbound 2000 Ford Ranger pickup. State police said Riley was not in a designated crosswalk, which is on the west side of the intersection.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, said Cpl. Abigail E. Haas of New Castle County paramedics.

The driver of the truck, Chase A. Urban, 19, of New Castle, was not injured.

Police said drug and alcohol use by Riley is being considered as a factor in the crash.

The westbound lanes of Route 4 were closed between Churchmans Road and Old Churchmans Road for about two hours as the crash was investigated.

About 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, a 25-year-old woman was killed crossing Leipsic Road in Dover.
