UPDATE: Police release name of man killed
TOWNSEND, DELAWARE (6/13/2015) A 46-year-old Middletown man was killed when his SUV struck a utility pole south of Townsend and the vehicle rolled on its side, ejecting him, Delaware State Police said this afternoon.
The crash was discovered by a passing motorist about 3:35 a.m. today on Dexter Corner Road north of Ratledge Road. The exact time the accident happened has not been determined.
The driver, whose name has not been released, was northbound when his 2002 Jeep Liberty left the east edge of the road before veering across to the other side and started to overturn, with the passenger side hitting a pole, breaking it in half. The Jeep came to rest on the passenger side, police said, near the west edge of the roadway.
The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected out the driver’s door window. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said speed and alcohol are being considered as factors in the crash.
Dexter Corner Road was closed in the area about 4.5 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
